Cathode oxidation treatment is totally different from metal plating. Cathode oxidation treatment consists of penetrated and built-up aluminum oxide whereas plating thickens with plating layers, such as zinc, copper, or nickel, on the surface of metal. Re-anodizing process on once-anodized aluminum will thin down the material for oxidation film, including penetrated aluminum oxide, or anodic film, needs re-stripping. Plating can be re-stripped and re-plated on the same material without dimensional changes.

Thickness of hard anodic oxidation film is aprx. 30 μm, and anodized oxidation film is aprx. 5 μm. When anodic oxidation film is built up thickly, the cell size of hard anodic oxidation film becomes smaller.  
Plating is a surface covering in which a metal is deposited on a conductive surface. Plating is used to decorate objects, for corrosion inhibition, to improve solderability, to harden, to improve wearability, and for other purposes. Examples are zinc, chrome, nickel, gold, silver, tin, cadmium, etc.
